Marie Ilse Bourlanges (FR) is an architectural and textile designer based in the Netherlands. After studying architecture in Paris, she moved to Amsterdam to continue in Architectural design at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy, where she stayed on for a second degree in Textile design. For her graduation in the Textile department, she created the project ‘Decay’ to explore and expose how traces of time and use can be embedded in textile, resulting in intricate collections of lines that ebb and flower across the textile to reveal some of the most intimate movements of daily life.

Marie Ilse's current work continues to focus on the embodiment of time in physical environments, surfaces and textures. She understands design as a tool to induce communication between people. Either inspired from relationships or driven by the need to bind people, she qualifies her works as pauses in a story or moments she chooses to fix. These moments are her personal interpretation of subjects often based on the complexity of contemporary society: cultural borders vs. understanding; individuals vs. communities; isolation vs. relationships; indifference vs. care.

Her work has been awarded and exhibited by several European organizations, including the 2008 SuperStories triennial of contemporary art, fashion and design in Hasselt, Belgium.
