In
the mid-90’s the Dutch foundation Droog Design joined with
the Structures and Materials Lab at
TU Delft on a project called DryTech which
put the knowledge and advanced material resources of the laboratory
at the disposal of a handful of very talented designers.
Based
on the laboratory's initiative to evolve 'minimum energy structures,'
designers Marcel Wanders, Jurgen Bey and Hella Jongerius were challenged
to 'weave' products with a high-tech lightness and strength. To
achieve this, the three designers experimented with new fiber-based
materials, resulting in several innovative, market-ready products.
This
collaboration between Delft and the Droog designers in part inspired
slowLab's goal as a creative laboratory. Taking the lead from Tu
Delft's successful melding of traditional methods of making with
cutting- edge material science, slowLab hopes in the future to provide
both financial and material support to designers for experimentation
with new materials and processes, and to help bring their new and
slow-er product solutions to public use.
